Always wanted to crochet but felt lost the moment you looked at a pattern? This book starts at the very beginning: no experience, no supplies, no jargon assumed.
You will learn which yarn and hook to buy (and what to ignore), how to hold them, and how to make the slip knot and chain. Then come the five stitches most patterns are built on, with clear step-by-step instructions, a turning chain table and a practice sampler. A full chapter decodes patterns: abbreviations, brackets, asterisks, gauge, and a US-to-UK terms conversion table so you never confuse a double with a treble again.
You will learn to increase, decrease, make a magic ring and keep circles flat with a simple formula, then finish like a pro with neat ends, seams and borders. Finally you make six real projects, each teaching a new skill: a dishcloth, a chunky scarf, round coasters, a classic granny square, a ribbed hat sized to your head and a little stuffed ball. A troubleshooting table explains why edges wander and how to fix them.

These five stitches differ mainly in height. Each one is made by repeating "yarn over and pull through" a different number of times. Single crochet is a short, dense stitch, perfect for dishcloths, amigurumi and sturdy fabric. Insert the hook into the stitch. Yarn over and pull up a loop. You have 2 loops on the hook. Yarn over and pull through both loops. To start a row of single crochet on a chain, work the first stitch into the second chain from the hook. At the start of each new row you make a few chains to bring the yarn up to the height of the next stitch. This is the turning chain. The pattern will tell you whether the turning chain counts. If it counts, skip the first stitch of the row and work your last stitch into the top of the previous row's turning chain. If it does not count, work into the very first stitch. Getting this wrong is the main reason beginners' rectangles turn into triangles or trapezoids. Count your stitches at the end of every row while you are learning. Place a stitch marker in the first and last stitch of each row so you can see exactly where they are.
