You have a job offer on the table, or you know your work is worth more than you are paid. You want to ask, but you worry about sounding greedy, freezing up, or having the offer withdrawn. This book gives you a calm, step-by-step way through it.
You will learn how to research what your role is really worth, set three clear numbers (ideal, target and walk-away) and build a one-page case from your achievements. Then come the scripts: what to say when you receive an offer, how to counter by phone or email, how to ask for a raise, how to go after a promotion, and exactly how to respond to replies like "there is no budget" or "you are at the top of your band".
You will also find a list of everything else you can negotiate, from flexible working to training budgets and early salary reviews, plus checklists for before, during and after the conversation. Practical, warm and direct, it is the guide to keep open on your desk before your next pay talk.

The moment between receiving an offer and accepting it is often your strongest position. The employer has chosen you and wants you to say yes. Step 1: Respond with enthusiasm, not a decision. "Thank you so much. I am really excited about this role and the team. Could you send me the full offer in writing so I can review the details? I will come back to you by Thursday." Asking for time is normal. One to three working days is usually reasonable. Step 3: Make your counteroffer. "Thank you again for the offer. I am very keen to join. Having reviewed it, I would like to discuss the base salary. Based on my research for similar roles and the experience I bring with [specific skill or result], I was expecting something closer to 56,000. If we can get there, I am ready to accept." Then stop talking. Silence feels uncomfortable, but it gives the other person space to respond. Do not fill it by lowering your number. If they say the salary is fixed: "I understand. In that case, could we look at other parts of the package? A six-month salary review with clear goals, or an extra week of leave, would make a real difference."
